This is my first thread but I couldn't resist asking... do you have food(s) that you love to eat, probably only very occasionally, but that are 'shameful'? I have two - a Fray Bentos tinned steak and kidney pie and Kraft Mac and Cheese (I grew up in New Jersey). These are at odds with the rest of my diet and my love of cooking and fine dining but sometimes I just can't help myself! I hope I am not alone in my secret and I won't find myself banished from this lovely forum, lol! Would love to hear about your shameful eats... |

Oh, I could happily scoff a whole Fray Bentos pie - the lovely savoury meatiness of it, and that soggy layer of chewy pastry under the crisp top. Who was the genius who had the idea of putting a pie in a tin? I imagine those tins went to every corner of the British empire, sustaining lonely bachelors in their jungle outposts... |

They truly are a work of genius, apart from the portion calculation as they are meant to serve four people! The thought of sharing spoils the pleasure and shame! |

Have to admit we often have fray bentos steak and kidney pie with chips and baked beans. You just can't replicate the taste yourself. I also like walking along the seafront with a carton of prawns and a cocktail stick... |

My food shame is awful I am almost too ashamed to say... I can only eat it when drunk as I know its soo shameful. My husband once bought me a bottle of champagne in order to get me drunk enough to have a chilli covered KEBAB. Urrgghh the sober thought makes me shudder but after a bottle of moet it is delicious. I also love jellied eels and pie and mash. I once had some sent mail order from London as I live up north now. It was not the same without the marble table and tiled walls of the pie and mash shop though. |

Fattart - I too come from London originally (the East End) and Sunday tea was always shrimps, winkles and (for my Dad) jellied eels from the van by the local pub. Ahhhh memories... |

Hey Prawn, a soul mate, yes whelks, crab, prawns, winkle sandwiches Sunday tea definitely. I miss it sooo much. The other weekend we did a 6 hour round trip to Blakeney in Norfolk for the caravan with oysters, brown shrimps, cockles, crab etc....Oh it was so nice. Also in London you could get all sorts of fish with your fish and chips, rock, skate, place, soul, haddock. In good old Yorkshire all you can get is cod, cod and and more cod. The peas are good though and they use lovely dripping for frying so not all bad. Of course I am close to Bradford too which is fantastic for curry. I would still run back down south at the first opportunity don't get me started on the weather...... |

Wow Pennifger that brought back some memories. When I was little we used to go on caravan holidays and for weeks before my mother would add extras to the weekly shop and store them under their bed for the holiday (tins of course) and Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie was a holiday staple (the only time we eat it). Another favourite was tinned macaroni cheese. Happy Days!;-) |

Heinz winter vegetable soup or Knorr packet chicken noodle soup! Both childhood foods for me.
Salty thin microwave hotdogs dipped in mustard and ketchup mmmmmmmmmmmm almost to hot to handle or chew but somehow you manage!
Butterscotch flavour angel delight. A Girl Guide camp specialty.
Diet coke. It's so bad but so good. Still seems like a treat to me as was never allowed fizzy as a child.

Erm I stopped eating crispy pancakes forever ago, not keen on tinned pies, went off tinned pear shaped blocks of ham, can't bring myself to eat pasta n'sauce by batchelors.
I don't do McDs, KFC or anything like that.
I'm useless aren't I? :o( I think the trashiest I get but am not ashamed is a fish finger sandwhich but that's like onece a year.
Is dipping hot toast into tea shameful cos I do that maybe twice a year?!!

This has turned into a bit of a walk down memory lane lol. Fray Bentos pies and Crispy Pancakes. Wow.
But is it just me or are they not now as good as they used to be? They just don't seem to have the quantity of filling they used to... or maybe the memory is just better than the reality.
Haven't had an FB for ages but there'll be one in this week's shopping!

I have a weakness for fried foods, particularly french fries.
Thankfully (or not), there are not too many places in Zurich which sell french fries. You can buy them from one or two sausage stands here, or otherwise order them as a side dish in a restaurant. So when I have been without french fries for what may seem an eternity, I will sneak into McDonald's for a quick fix. And that is usually the only time I will go into McDonald's! |

In defence of Messers Fray & Bentos, I've NEVER encountered gristle or anything remotely dubious in one of their lovely pies. I'm not saying it's a health food, but as far as I'm aware the quality of the product is consistently high. |

Reading about all your Fray Bentos pie weaknesses triggers a childhood memory too - but I don't associate it with pies. Does anyone know was there ever a Fray Bentos brand of meat paste (something like Bovril?) That seems to be what a can vaguely recall. I tried to find out on Wikipedia - and discovered that"Fray Bentos"is a country in Uruguay which I never knew before - and it was here that Fray Bentos pies were first manufactured! |

Oh- my shameful thing -there are lots butt the first one that springs to mind is Condensed milk by the spoonful straight out of a tin! I think I can safely blame it on the "Pukkies" we had as children - they were little pyramid-shaped, Tetra pak individual portions of condensed milk that you could drink with a straw. My mother bought them for us when it was school holidays.... mmmmmm wha ta good idea! Wish they still made them! |

Eeewww I saw a programme once that was about how they made tinned pies and there was a process where the filling was sort of mechanically and chemically partially digested to make the meat tender, I know its mechanical but it made me thankful to be a vege the thought of it yuk!
I am partial to a fish finger sandwich on cheap white bread from time to time i have also been know to eat baked beans cold from the tin by scooping them out with bread! |

Cucina, lift your head high and walk with me, without shame, to declare our love of the ambrosia. It's lurvely! - especially kept in the fridge. Asda used to do a 3-pack, not sure if they still do. And a while ago when I needed to lose a little weight and was watching the fat content of what I ate I seem to recall it was below the 'magic' figure of 5% fat. Or maybe I was just in denial and had the calorie-goggles on when reading the label :o) |

Oh not Vesta curries, but Vesta chow mein and Vesta paella. Fray Bentos pies were a real student treat as were the tins of Danish Zwan kidneys in gravy. Where there is a "good" branch of Burger King I like their cheeseburgers - no sauces or pickle - with salty chips piping hit like they do down south in Sunderland. Oh, the nice Turkish chip shop 8 miles away does great fish cakes and fried roe as well as chips and pizzas but I only buy there once a year. Hey - thick white toast with grilled Dairylea spread and a wee hint of Daddy's sauce under the cheese if we didn't have Dairylea. Considering what a snotty organic locally-sourced foodie I pretend to be I know way too much about this stuff. Angel Delight and Symington's table creams. Aaaaaagh! |
