  • Worcestershire Sauce in France

    Hi Team, I'm hoping you will be able to help me. I have recently moved to the French Alps and am struggling to find all those vital store cupboard essentials that we take for granted "back home"?.  I'm wondering if you know of a substitute (or French version) for Worcestershire sauce as i can't seem to find anything resembling it out here. Many thanks in advance for your wisdom and help! Cratchet.

    Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a specifically French version of Worcestershire sauce and if you can't find it in larger supermarkets or hypermarkets then you can buy Lea & Perrins on-line, either direct from the UK or via a French supplier (please see the links below for some examples).  It is also worth keeping an eye open for the American brand French's, who also make a Worcestershire sauce. 

    The main ingredients of Worcestershire are vinegar, molasses, anchovies and tamarind so you could also try mixing a substitite from these ingredients. We would suggest trying 1 teaspoon of white wine vinegar, 1 teaspoon dark brown sugar, a few drops of Thai fish sauce and a dot of tamarind paste, then tweaking thios mixture according to your own taste.
