Buttermilk Birthday Cake in Shaped Pan

Asked by Haddy1971. Answered on 7th June 2015

Full question

Hi, I am making a birthday cake using the Wilton patterned soccer ball pan but want to Make 2 and sandwich them together to make a sphere (rather than the half ball as depicted by Wilton). Can you please tell me the quantity to use per half and if I will need to use dowels or whether it will be self supported (it will be resting on something and will therefore not roll) Also, can you tell me how long this cake will keep for. Many thanks

Our answer

Nigella's Buttermilk Birthday Cake (from Domestic Goddess) is always popular for shaped cakes as it is a moist, slightly firmer cake and is good for shaped pans. The instructions for this cake pan suggest using a 2-layer cake mix and as the Buttermilk Birthday Cake makes a 2-layer 20cm/8-inch cake one recipe of the cake would be enough on this basis for one half of the cake in the pan. However we strongly suggest looking at the comments on the Wilton website for this particular pan as other people have had some problems with baking cakes in this pan.

The Buttermilk Borthday cake will keep for about 5 days in an airtight container in a cool place. Un-iced cakes can also be wrapped in a double layer of clongfilm (plastic wrap) and a layer of foil and frozen for up to 3 months. To defrost the cake unwrap it, put it on a wire rack and leave at room temperature for about 4 hours.
