Cheese Fondue Pot

Asked by Yoggifood. Answered on 18th March 2015

Full question

I like the look of Nigella's Cheese Fondue recipe but is there an alternative way of making the cheese fondue without having to buy a fondue set ?

Our answer

Cheese fondues, such as Nigella's (from Nigella Express and on the Nigella website) can be made in most heavy-based pots or saucepans. Something like a small to medium sized cast-iron saucepan/casserole pan/dutch oven is ideal and you could use regular forks for dipping. The main problem is keeping the fondue hot while people dip into it at the table. If the fondue cools too much then the cheese will start to set.

In some places you can just buy the metal stand and burner holder rather than the whole fondue set and it may be worth checking on-line. Otherwise if you have a plug-in electric ring then that would work on a low heat. We understand also that once you have made the fondue it is possible to transfer the mixture to a slow cooker that is plugged in at the table, to keep it warm while serving. However we have not tried this ourselves so cannot guarantee the results and also you need to be cautious if the slow cooker has a non-stick interior as this coud be scratched by the tines of a fork.
