Slow Cooked Spanish Chicken With Chorizo

Asked by Bunny9. Answered on 11th June 2015

Full question

Can you use a slow cooker instead of the oven for the Spanish Chicken With Chorizo and Potatoes?

Our answer

Nigella's Spanish Chicken With Chorizo and Potatoes (from Kitchen and on the Nigella website) is a "traybake" recipe where the ingredients are roasted together on baking sheets or in shallow roasting tins. With this particular recipe the heat of the oven renders the fat from the chicken and chorizo and crisps the skin of the chicken and also the edges of the potates.

As this is all roasted in a hot oven, at 220c/425F, it is unfortunately not suitable for a slow cooker. A slow cooker works with very gentle heat and although it will cook the ingredients over a long period of time there will not be the evaportaion of liquid that you would get in the hot oven. So the chicken and sausages will be soft and the potatoes particularly will be sitting in a fair amount of liquid. Slow cookers are better for stews and you may like to try Nigella's Slow Cooker Lamb And Pasta recipe on the Nigella website.
