BRITISH SOURCES & STOCKISTS
MEAT AND FISH
It probably isn’t altogether necessary to scrabble about for producers of organic meat now that supermarkets are more on the ball about stocking properly reared and treated meat themselves, but it can’t hurt. I don’t buy meat unless I know who I’m buying it from and they, in turn, know who is supplying it to them, and are sure that the animals are properly reared (including naturally fed), properly treated and can be surely sourced (that’s to say the provenance of each creature can be checked).
You should always find out if there is a farm near you that you can build a relationship with and get your meat from direct, or if you live in the city, a faraway one you can build a telephonic relationship with (often the best kind) instead. Click here to search for local producers with BigBarn's interactive map.

HERBS AND SPICES
You may have noticed, and I have made no attempt to hide it, that I have gone all out for pink peppercorns in Feast – indeed, in my life in general. Purists will sneeringly tell you that this is not proper pepper and just a whimsical fantasy. This may be so, but I like to use it and if you do you will need to find a good supplier, as you will for the mixed herbs with lavender that I use for the St Tropez chicken and many of the recipes in the Eid chapter.
Seasoned Pioneers
For harissa, juniper berries, fennel and Nigella seeds, lime leaves, za’atar, sumac, ras-el-hanout, hot smoked paprika (piccante pimenton) and much much more! I'm a great fan of this company, which stocks just about every spice or herb mix you could need. They also sell the lavender herb mix for the St Tropez chicken in Feast.

Bunalun Organic Farm
You may have noticed, and I have made no attempt to hide it, that I have gone all out for pink peppercorns in Feast. I like to buy mine from this organic herb farm in Ireland - they sell various herbs and spices (and some jams and vinegars and a number of comestibles), all organic and all beautifully packaged. They also sell the mixed herbs with lavender that I use for the St Tropez chicken in Feast.

BAKING AND CAKE DECORATING
My weakness, I know, but very helpful if you don’t have a specialist cake or baking shop near you.
Jane Asher Party Cakes and Sugarcraft
I hate to think what percentage of my income goes on buying fancy sprinkles, odd-shaped cake tins and cutters and various urgent needed follies at this shop. Anything you need, you can get here I should think, including food colouring pastes, coloured ready-to-roll icing, instant royal icing, wafer and sugar roses and other flowers and decorations, sugar sprinkles, including the black sugar for the ghoul graveyard cake on page 354 and 70% cocoa solid dark chocolate buttons, excellent for melting and cooking with.

King Arthur Flour Baker’s Catalogue
I know it’s a bit odd to give an American supplier here, but this company will ship abroad and their range of bakery goods, cutters and sprinkles (including the sugar hearts for the love buns on page 138) is huge and the catalogue is – for me at least – compulsive reading.

Coconut Essence
Since I wrote Feast, which features a couple of recipes using coconut essence, fate intervened and suddenly coconut essence is no where to be found; I suspect bossy meddling from the EU is to blame but have no proof. Oakleaf European do a highly concentrated - and expensive - version and I am doing my best to locate a more practical alternative. Use this concentrated version with caution - a few drops will suffice. Given its price, you might want to time-share a bottle with friends!
http://www.oakleaf-european.co.uk
Normal coconut essence is now available from Jane Asher Party Cakes, priced at £6:95 plus 65p for postage and packaging within the UK. To order, send an email with your delivery address and contact telephone number to:

GOLDEN SULTANAS
These are amber-coloured soft sultanas and although you can just as easily use regular sultanas I have a real weakness for the paler, glowing beauties which I mention often in Feast. I had thought they were available only in a few specialist outlets (I buy mine under the Arabella label from Selfridges and Panzers in London) but have since managed to cajole Oakleaf European into adopting the role of mail-order supplier.
