What does this mean?

Ingredients

  • 0.3 cups canola oil
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa (unsweetened)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1.3 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet)
  • ½ cup coarsely chopped pecan nuts (or walnuts)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F (180 Celsius or gas mark 4) with an oven rack in the center position.
  2. Spray an 8-inch square pan with canola oil.
  3. Measure all ingredients in turn (except the chocolate chips and nuts) into the large bowl of an electric mixer or a mixing bowl.
  4. Beat at slow speed (if using a mixer) or by hand with a wooden spoon until everything is combined, then beat at medium mixer speed for 1 minute, until the batter is smooth; if you are mixing by hand, be sure to beat the batter well, about 3 minutes.
  5. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top and press them in slightly.
  7. Scatter the nuts evenly over the chocolate.
  8. Bake the brownies for 35 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from oven and set on a wire rack to cool.
  10. Cut into squares or bars when they are completely cool.
