Introduction

As a vegan, tofu is a regular and necessary food source. Making it palatable, especially to non-vegans, is a skill and I think I have finally mastered some simple techniques to produce a truly tasty tofu experience!

Ingredients

Serves: as required

  • tofu (firm)
  • light soy sauce (authentic Asian brands are the best)
  • garlic (minced)
  • lemon juice
  • olive oil

Method

  • Slice tofu into approx. 1cm thick slices.
  • Heat griddle pan with olive oil to a medium heat. Lay tofu slices in pan and splash with soy sauce and garlic.
  • Fry for approx. 1 minute. Turn and splash other side with soy sauce and garlic. Fry for one minute.
  • Flip again and this time splash with lemon juice. This seals the tofu and makes it slightly crispy. Fry a further 2 minutes or so.
  • Flip again and splash with lemon juice to seal other side. Fry again.
  • Only use a medium heat and take your time with the frying stages. Don't overcook. Tofu should be slightly crispy around the edges but still floppy. As it cools it becomes firmer.

    Additional Information

Can be eaten straight away or cold in sandwiches with tomato sauce, yum! You could also use these ingredients to marinade the tofu before frying. Add fresh chilli, grated ginger and shallots. This will impart stronger flavour to the tofu and will go down better with non-vegetarians. Also fabulous on the BBQ! Sometimes it can take a bit of practice to get the texture you desire. If you are after a firmer texture, fry for longer on each side. It will also be firmer once allowed to completely cool and is then re-heated. For a tasty texture alternative, deep fry tofu chunks for a lovely fluffy texture which can then be thrown into a stir-fry or curry. The tofu "puffs" absorb flavours extra well this way. You can also buy tofu pre-puffed (pre-fried) at Asian supermarkets.
