I’m allergic to almonds. Can I use walnuts or hazelnuts instead in Nigella's Apricot And Almond cake? Thank you.

Our answer

Nigella's Apricot Almond Cake With Rosewater And Cardamom (from SIMPLY NIGELLA) is a gluten-free cake made with ground almonds. We suspect that ground hazelnuts could be a possible alternative to almonds for this recipe, as the two nuts have very similar fat contents. However the flavour will always be slightly different as almonds have a mild flavour, whereas the flavour of hazelnuts is more pronounced. So we think that using hazelnuts will affect the taste of the finished cake.

Nigella's Gluten-Free Banana Bread uses ground almonds and we think that this would be a much better cake to substitute the almonds with hazelnuts as the flavours of banana and chocolate complement hazelnuts. We would however mention that as we have not tried either of these cakes with ground hazelnuts as a substitute we are unable to guarantee the results. We would also suggest trying Nigella's Nutella Cake, as this cake specifically uses ground hazelnuts.
