Barbecue Sauce

Asked by Jo74. Answered on 11th May 2014

Full question

Hi. I'm making Ed's Mother's Meatloaf with accompanying barbecue sauce. Can you advise how long the barbecue sauce can be kept for and is it freezable? Thank you!

Our answer

One of Nigella's serving suggestions for Ed's Mother's Meatloaf (from Kitchen) is a "Quick BBQ Gravy" that is made from dark brown sugar, beef stock (broth), mustard, soy sauce, tomato puree (paste), redcurrant jelly and vinegar. The ingredients are simply mixed together in a saucepan and warmed through. The BBQ gravy should keep for up to 5 days in the fridge in a covered container, but make sure that you refrigerate it as soon as it has cooled. We would also recommend only re-heating the BBQ gravy once, so only reheat as much as you need each time.

The BBQ gravy will freeze. Put it in an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw the sauce overnight in the fridge before using. Please note that unfortunately the meatloaf does not freeze well as it contains hard boiled eggs and the eggs become very rubbery and unpalatable if they are frozen and then thawed.
