Student Food

Asked by McGlynny. Answered on 2nd October 2012

Full question

Hello, I was just wanting to know whether Nigella had any student friendly recipes? I'm a student and I love to cook, particularly Nigella's recipes! However with a tight budget and limited utensils it can be quite hard to do some of the recipes sometimes. Is there anything you would recommend that would be good to make under these circumstances? Thanks!

Our answer

Pasta is always a student favourite and Nigella's new book Nigellissima has plenty of quick pasta ideas that can be made quickly and with limited resources. We would particularly suggest Pasta with Courgettes, Green Pasta with Blue Cheese, Spaghettini with Lemon and Garlic Breadcrumbs and Spaghetti with Tuna, Lemon & Rocket. Spaghetti with Marmite, from Kitchen is another cheap, quick and delicious option (provided that you like Marmite!) or try the Slut's Spaghetti from the same book.

Traybakes are also a good "one pan" dish, easily cooked in the oven. Nigella's traybakes tend to use chicken thighs. Thighs are cheaper than chicken breasts and tend to be tastier and moister than the breasts. Nigella's traybakes also often cook potatoes in with the meat so all you need to add is salad or a vegetable. Try the Italian Traybake from Nigellissima, Spanish Chicken with Chorizo from Kitchen (also on Nigella's website) and Maple Chicken 'N' Ribs from Express (and see the related recipe).
