  • ½ pound butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 6 oranges (zest of - 1/3 cup)
  • 3 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Method

  • Cream butter and sugar, add in eggs one a time and then add the orange zest.
  • Mix the dry ingredients and wet ingredients respectively; add the dry and wet ingredients alternately to the butter/sugar mixture beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Pour into two floured and buttered loaf pans, lined with buttered/floured parchment paper, and bake 50-60 minutes at moderate (350ºF) oven.
  • Cool 10 minutes in pan and then remove cakes to a wire rack.
  • Pour orange syrup over cakes and cool completely.

  • Cook 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup orange juice over low heat until sugar dissolves. Cool.
