Can I Use A Different Liquorice Powder For The Liquorice And Blackcurrant Chocolate Cake?

Asked by quantum. Answered on 31st March 2023

Full question

The Liquorice and Blackcurrant Chocolate Cake uses Lakrids Fine Liquorice Powder. That product is no longer available to purchase. Can you suggest a substitute product?

Our answer

Nigella's Liquorice And Blackcurrant Chocolate Cake (from SIMPLY NIGELLA) is inspired by one of Nigella's favourite childhood sweets (candies). The moist sponge cake is filled with blackcurrant jam and topped with a chocolate ganache icing.

For the recipe Nigella suggested using Lakrids Fine Liquorice Powder as she has made the cake herself many times with this brand. Unfortunately we understand from Lakrids that they are having trouble sourcing organic, high quality liquorice root and so, at time of writing, do not know when they will be able to sell the product again. However, we suspect that you could use a substitute, though as products vary by region we can't give any specific brands. We would suggest looking locally or online for a good quality, preferably organic, fine liquorice powder. It needs to be as fine as possible so that it doesn't affect the texture of the cake.
