Spiced Peaches as Christmas Gifts

Asked by lincs88. Answered on 9th December 2012

Full question

Can Nigella's Spiced Peaches be made in advance and stored for a period of time as a preserve? I was hoping to make some and give it as gifts. Thank you.

Hi, I'm going to make the Spiced Peaches as gifts for my friends this Christmas. How long will the peaches last in the jar? Many thanks! Adam.

I made the spiced peaches for Christmas time last year, they were delicious. How far in advance can I make them please? EAGarlick.

Our answer

The Spiced Peaches from Nigella Express (and see related recipe link) are intended to be an accompaniment to a hot or cold ham. Unfortunately they are not a preserve and so will not last for a long time. Preserves such as jams and chutneys have high levels of sugar which help them to keep, are usually cooked for a longer period of time and are put into sterilized jars.

For the Spiced Peaches the keeping time is dependent on the life of the canned peaches once they have been opened. We would suggest that the peaches should be consumed within 4 days of making. However we have noticed that the "use by after opening" information for canned peaches in light syrup varies according to brand and you should follow the specific guidance on the particular cans that you use.

The Spiced Peaches should be allowed to cool slightly then transferred to clean containers, covered tightly and refrigerated. They should be kept refrigerated until eaten, though you could warm them gently before serving (but discard any leftovers if you do this). If you are giving the peaches as gifts then make sure that you label them with instructions to keep in the fridge and also a "use by" date.
