Put dates sugar and margarine/butter into a bowl and add 1/4 pint of boiling water. Leave to cool Sieve flour and baking soda together and add to ingredients with egg and walnuts Bake in greased and lined loaf tin at 180.C Gas 4 350F for 45 mins

- 8 ounces self-rising flour
- 2 ounces margarine (or butter)
- 2 ounces superfine sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 packet chopped dates
- 2 ounces walnuts
