Asked by craig74. Answered on 13th June 2019

Full question

Is it possible to use frozen blackberries with the Apple And Blackberry Kuchen recipe or will they become too soggy when cooked? They are out of season at the moment. Thank you.

Our answer

Nigella's Apple And Blackberry Kuchen (from NIGELLA BITES) is a sweet, yeasted dough topped with fruit and a streusel mixture. Nigella uses a combination of blackberries and chopped apple for the fruit mixture.

We suspect that it would be possible to use frozen blackberries for this dish but you should use them direct from frozen. There is a risk that the frozen blackberries will break down a little more during the baking and be a little softer, though the streusel topping will absorb some of the liquid and the kuchen should still be good to eat warm. However, as we have not tried the recipe in this form, we are unable to guarantee the results.
