Full question
Hi I making a smaller version of Nigella’s Ultimate Christmas Pudding and wondered if I could re-use a large Greek yoghurt pot to cook it in or do you think it will melt? It isn’t as sturdy as a plastic pudding mould but it is the right ,size and the shape is almost right!
Our answer
Nigella's Ultimate Christmas Pudding (from NIGELLA CHRISTMAS) is quite large and usually steamed in a 3-pint pudding basin. It is possible to make smaller versions of the pudding, which require a shorter steaming time.
Unfortunately we can't recommend using any container or mould that is not sold as completely heatproof and suitable for cooking. We are not sure if the plastic of a yogurt pot would stand up to 100C for a long period of time and it would be a waste of ingredients if something were to go wrong during the steaming process. There is also the possibility that the pot would warp and let in water during steaming, and a waterlogged pudding would not be appetising on Christmas Day. We would suggest either buying a plastic pudding mould, which can be found fairly easily online, or a Pyrex or similar heatproof glass bowl. The heatproof glass bowl can be used for other cooking and food preparation/storage for the rest of the year.
