Full question
Could the ingredients for the Irish Oaten Rolls recipe be halved? I love so many of Nigella's recipes, but often the quantity is too much for a senior living on her own. It would be helpful if a recipe would indicate if it could be successfully cut in half.
Our answer
Nigella's Irish Oaten Rolls (from KITCHEN) are a type of soda bread, so they are quick and easy to make. The recipe makes 12 rolls, and they can be frozen after baking, then defrosted and reheated in a low oven for a few minutes.
It is also easy to scale the recipe down and make a half or even a quarter quantity, particularly as the raising agent is bicarbonate of soda (baking soda). To make 6 rolls, simply use 200g wholemeal (whole wheat) flour, 50g rolled oats plus 1 teaspoon for the topping, 1 teaspoon salt flakes or 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 150ml Guinness, 75ml buttermilk or yogurt, 2 tablespoons oil and 2 tablespoons honey. To make 3 rolls just halve these quantities again. The baking time is the same, as the rolls will still be the same size.
