Asked by Nicolahugs. Answered on 16th August 2017

Full question

Can I make the Chilli Jam without a food processor? Will the chillis and peppers be fine enough if I hand chop?

Our answer

Nigella's Chiilli Jam (from NIGELLA CHRISTMAS) is a spicy condiment made with sweet red (bell) peppers and chopped red chillies. Both the sweet peppers and the chillies need to be very finely chopped so that the flecks stay suspended in the jelly once it has cooled and set.

A food processor is the simplest way to do this, but it is possible to chop the sweet peppers and chillies by hand if you have time, patience and a sharp knife. First remove the seeds and stalks from both, then cut the flesh into long, very thin shoestring strips. Chop these strips into fine dice for the jelly. You could then give the diced pepper mixture a final cross-chop with a large, sharp knife for good measure, though tiny dice should be small enough for the jam.
