Can I use mixed spice instead of the Chinese 5 spice powder for the Cider and 5-Spice Bundt Cake?
Nigella's Cider And 5-Spice Bundt Cake (from SIMPLY NIGELLA) uses fresh ginger and 5-spice powder and is similar to a sticky gingerbread. 5-spice powder is usually a combination of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise and Sichuan pepper. This gives the cake a warm flavouring with a slight kick.
Mixed spice has slightly more variation in ingredients but usually has a base of cinnamon, ginger and coriander and can include allspice, cloves and mace. It lacks the fire of 5-spice powder but as it is often used in gingerbread it could be used as an alternative, just bear in mind that the flavour of the cake will be slightly different and it will be a Cider and Mixed Spice Bundt Cake.
