Nigella in Australia - Uk Books and Conversions

Asked by littlehouseofcupcakes. Answered on 6th January 2011

Full question

Hi there I buy most of my books online, as I'm in Australia (originally from UK), and book variety is limited and pricey. Recipe books here, in particular, have US measurements (cups, etc), which I can't abide as it's so inaccurate. So, I prefer UK recipe books. I've just bought Nigella Christmas from The Book Depository in the UK because it offers free worldwide delivery, unlike Amazon. However, the book that has arrived is clearly for the US market with ingredients (no idea what Graham's crackers are), measurements, etc all meant to the USA. Very annoying. To return the book will cost as much in postage as the cost of the book. So, I have resigned myself to giving it to a friend and reordering a UK one. The problem with any online ordering is that you can't browse through the book, and I would have seen straight away that it's an American book, can you give me the ISBN number? Thanks Abigail Pope Perth, Western Australia PS:

English based in Australia, I bought Kitchen, and got the American version! I know what many of the ingredients translate to, but not all the measurements - can you tell me please, what is a pint of tomatoes, a stick of butter, turbinado sugar? Also, where could I get a dessert shell pan? Thanks jib.225

Our answer

Nigella's UK publisher is Chatto & Windus and the ISBN number for Christmas is 9780701183226 (note that Nigella's US publisher is Hyperion). The ISBN number for Kitchen UK is 9780701184605.

You can use Australian cups in lieu of American ones as there is very little difference between them (an Australian cup is 250mls vs American 240mls) and for flour measures Nigella uses a conversion of 1 cup = 150g.

Unfortumnately we don't have the space to give a full list of conversions but for those mentioned:

Graham crackers = digestive biscuits, 1 pint tomatoes = 300g, 1 stick butter = 110g (1 tablespoon = 15g), turbinado sugar = demerara sugar.

The dessert shell pan is made by Wilton and is available on their website in Australia, the product SKU is ZO-W2105-8600
