Can I use something other than Sambuca in the Sambuca Kisses recipe?
Nigella's Sambuca Kisses recipe (from Nigellissima) uses Sambuca as a flavouring element, as the Sambuca adds a mild anise note. If you are not keen on the flavour of Sambuca, or need to avoid the alcohol, then you can omit it from the batter mixture.
Instead you could add vanilla extract and we would suggest using half a teaspoon. Almond extract would be another possible alternative though we would use this with caution as it can become overpowering and add just a few drops to start with. You can then fry a half teaspoonful as a tester and taste it (let it cool first!) and add more extract if you like.
