It's not a beautiful picture, but these were delicious! I was afraid they would be too dry, but they were just about perfect. I do think mine could have used just a touch more liquid - perhaps a result of some old eggs. I used some lavender balsamic vinegar and vanilla sugar instead of the plain vinegar and caster sugar. I entered them into a baking competition at work. Sadly, they did not win, but I lost to a rhubarb-strawberry crumble, so I'm not terribly disappointed. Plus I have tons of leftover strawberry goodness. I'll definitely be making another batch of shortcakes tonight. I might add some fresh herbs to the strawberries this time around - a little basil and mint.
