I tried to channel both my grandmother, a “Slovak,” as she called herself, who spoke German, and my mother-in-law, a Scot who once told me that plastic wrap works better than parchment for rolling out the dough. There was no chance of finding currant anything in the Staten Island grocery store, but I did manage to find some raspberry jam imported from France — delicious! I also had a cookie cutter issue — did not have any little Christmas shapes, but I did have one little heart for Valentine’s, and I used my mincemeat pie cutter for the circle — I know it’s a little big, but I do think, when all was said and done, I achieved success.
