Introduction

My Oma was from Alsace Lorraine and these were the cookies she made every holiday season - they became a family tradition.

Ingredients

Serves: 10-12

  • 2⅓ cups flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ pound butter (real butter - lightly salted if you can find it, if not then 1 stick of salted and 1 stick of unsalted butter)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Method

  • Allow butter to come to room temperature.
  • Preheat oven to 375. Lightly grease cookie sheets.
  • Cream the butter and sugar, then add egg and vanilla.
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt. Add to creamed mixture.
  • Drop teaspoonfulls of batter onto baking pans. Butter the flat bottom of a drinking glass and dip into a bowl of granulated sugar (may use decorative colored sugars here) and then press down on top of each ball of dough flattening to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Dip glass in sugar for each cookie so that each has a coating of sugar on top.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes - edges should just be golden brown when done.
  • Additional Information

Using lightly salted butter is very important as is softening it without microwaving - just leave the butter out on the counter to soften.
