Spicy Meatballs With Orange Sauce

Metric Cups
  • 400 grams meat (chopped, or 200g of ground meat and 200g of ground pork)
  • 50 grams bread (drench in milk)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 carrots (cut thinly lengthwise)
  • 4 leeks (or 2 large onions)
  • 1 handful mint (chop all herbs together)
  • 1 handful fresh parsley (chop all herbs together)
  • 1 handful fresh coriander (chop all herbs together)
  • 2 large oranges (juice of)
  • olive oil
  • 5 grams allspice
  • salt
  • pepper

Method

Spicy Meatballs With Orange Sauce is a community recipe submitted by NYinRome and has not been tested by Nigella.com so we are not able to answer questions regarding this recipe.

  • Mix mince with soaked bread, egg spices and chopped herbs. Shape into small meatballs.
  • Put ribbon cut carrots and thinly sliced leeks (I used 2 red onions) in pan with oil on low heat. Cook for 3-5 minutes till softened and all covered well with olive oil.
  • Place meatballs on top of veg mix;at this point the recipe says to cover and cook 10minutes, but I threw in a glass of veg broth, then covered.
  • After 10 minutes or so, add the orange juice and continue cooking, until you have a lovely syrupy texture and the meatballs are done.
  • Chop some more mint and throw on top, taste for salt and serve.

    For the sauce I imagine you could use a glass of white wine too, instead of the veg broth. I used red onions, as I had those on hand and love them. As for the mince, the recipe called for mince meat, I did half and half, as written, but here too I guess you could use pork, lamb, chuck, in any amounts you wish.
