Introduction

Everybody loves bread and the smell of freshly baked bread. I found a recipe on a South African website one day and I have made it (with a few of my own changes) ever since.

Ingredients

Serves: 4

  • 1000 warm water
  • 4 packets yeast
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 8 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2000 flour

Method

  • Dissolve yeast in 1 cup of warm water.
  • Mix in remaining ingredients until dough is soft, but not sticky. When dough is soft and leaves sides of bowl, cut into 4 pieces. Let stand 15 minutes.
  • Pound each piece of dough for 1 minute with rolling pin on a lightly floured board. Form into loaves and put into 4 greased loaf pans. Let stand 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  • Bake for 20 to 30 minutes at 350º F / 180ºC, reducing it to 300ºF / 150ºC halfway through. It is done when golden brown and sounding hollow when you tap on it. Leave in for 5 more min at a time if not completely done.
  • Cool rack before removing loaves from pans.
