Our answer

Nigella's Anglo-Italain Trifle (from NIGELLA SUMMER) takes inspiration from both the traditional British trifle and the Italian tiramisu. The trifle sponges are soaked with limoncello, an Italian liqueur, that has been sharpened with a little extra lemon juice.

If you wish to avoid alcohol then a mixture of 150ml/⅔ cup of elderflower cordial (elderflower syrup) and 100ml/7 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice would be the best alternative. In the UK and most of Europe, elderflower cordial can be found in many supermarkets. In the US it is called elderflower syrup and you may need to buy it on line (the Monin brand is the most widely available) or it can be found in the food section of IKEA stores.
