Full question
Can I bake the dough for the Irish Oaten Rolls in a loaf tin?
Our answer
Nigella's Irish Oaten Rolls (from KITCHEN) are quick and easy to make when you would like to serve some fresh bread. The rolls bake quickly in a hot oven, though the dough can be formed into a round loaf and baked at 220c/200c Fan/425F for 10 minutes and then 190c/170c Fan/375F for a further 25 minutes, until the loaf sounds hollow if you tap on the base.
Soda bread can be quite crumbly, especially when freshly baked, so overall we prefer to bake the loaf in a round, squatter shape rather than as a tall tin loaf, as this could be more difficult to cut. However, i you really want to make the bread in a loaf pan then the dough would be enough to fill a 900g/2-lb loaf pan. We suggest lining the loaf pan with baking parchment, with the parchment coming up the sides of the pan. We suspect that it would be best to follow the baking isntructions for a round loaf, that is to bake for 10 minutes at the higher temperature and then lower the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes, until the loaf sounds hollow when the base is tapped. Please note that as we have not tried to bake the dough in a loaf tin ourselves, we are unable to guarantee the results,
