Heart Cupcakes

Asked by SuperCath. Answered on 7th February 2012

Full question

I am baking cupcakes for Valentine's Day at work as part of a fundraiser we are doing for a childrens' charity. I have ordered my heart shaped silicone cupcake cases but need to get hold of some paper cases to cook and hold them in, I can't seem to find any anywhere! Any ideas?

Our answer

Unfortunately we don't think that anyone is producing heart shaped paper cupcake cases, probably as they would be quite difficult to make. Also the silicone cases are re-usable and quite often it is assumed that the cakes will be served in the silicone cases.

We appreciate that this would be quite difficult for a bake sale so we would suggest looking at packaging the unmoulded cupcakes into clear cellophane bags instead. These are available from party supplies stores, some supermarkets and also on-line (we have given an example below but there are several suppliers if you want to check on-line). Bags often come with ties or you could use some ribbon to tie them instead.

If you are packaging the cupcakes this way then it is best to ice them with royal icing. Royal icing powder is available in UK supermarkets or you can make your own with icing sugar (confectioners' sugar) and egg white. Royal icing will set fairly firmly so you can add decorations and they should stick on. Also if you want to tint the icing red or pink then a royal icing is better for this as buttercream always has a slight yellow tint to it.
