Slow Cooker Lamb and Pasta

Asked by nilved. Answered on 5th February 2016

Full question

Hi, I love the idea of slow cooking the meat and pasta together, however nobody in our family really likes lamb. Could I substitute mince instead and if so would I need to change any other parts of the recipe?

Our answer

Nigella's Slow-Cooker Lamb and Pasta recipe (on the Nigella website) is a one-pot dish that uses minced (ground) lamb. It would be possible to use minced beef (ground beef) as a substitute but as lamb tends to have a slightly higher fat content than beef, we woud suggest buying regular beef mince (with a 10-15% fat content) instead of the lean or low-fat version (typically 5% or less fat).

Most of the flavours will go well with beef, but mint is a flavour more traditionally associated with lamb. So you may prefer to omit the dried mint from the recipe, or replace it with 1 teaspoon of dried thyme.
