Substitute for Haddock

Asked by HugoBacelar. Answered on 16th February 2016

Full question

Hello Nigella and Team! I have been looking at the Spiced And Fried Haddock with Broccoli Puree recipe but what would be an appropriate substitution for haddock? In South America (specifically Brazil) it is really hard, and expensive, to find haddock. Best regards.

Our answer

Nigella's Spiced And Frid Haddock With Broccoli Puree (from Simply Nigella and on the Nigella website) uses fillets of haddock, which is a firm white fish. The fish is dredged with a spicy flour mixture before being pan fried. Cod and pollock are from the same family and would be good substitutes. However most firm white fish fillets could be used, preferably from a sustainable source.

Haddock fillets vary in thickness and in the photograph of the dish the fillets are from the loin and are about 1 inch (2 1/2 cm) thick. If you are using thin fillets of fish, such as red snapper, then use the shorter cooking times that are given at the end of step 3.
