Tiramisini Without Alcohol

Asked by tia_dell. Answered on 23rd September 2015

Full question

I wanted to try making the Tiramisini for my cooking homework but I am not allowed to take wine into school so I was just wondering if could use vanilla essence or if there is anything else I could use? Thank you.

Our answer

Traditionally Tiramisu was made with sweet marsala wine but over time other alcohols have been used and also non-alcoholic versions are perfectly possible. Nigella's Tiramisini recipe (from Nigellissima) uses both coffee liqueur and marsala wine.

To make a non-alcoholic version replace the coffee liqueur with 2 extra tablespoons of strong coffee. And if omitting the marsala wine then it is a good idea to add a teaspoon of vanilla, but we would prefer to use the more natural vanilla extract, rather than vanilla essence (which is a synthetic vanilla flavouring). Also please note that as the Tiramisini cream contains raw eggs it should be kept refrigerated, so you will need to make sure that you can put it in the fridge as soon as you get to school.
