What Is The American Alternative For A Crunchie Bar In The Glitzy Chocolate Puddings?

Asked by ChattyCats. Answered on 6th May 2026

Full question

For those of us in the US, what exactly is a Crunchie bar, as used to top the Glutzy Chocolate Puddings? Is there a similar bar here in the States that I could look for? Thank you.

Our answer

Nigella's Glitzy Chocolate Puddings (from NIGELLA EXPRESS) are small chocolate sponge cakes topped with a chocolate glaze. The "glitzy" part comes from a golden sprinkling of crushed Crunchie bars.

Crunchie bars are sticks of honeycomb candy that are coated in milk chocolate. In the UK they are a popular candy bar and widely available. Unfortunately, they are not common in America and a Butterfinger bar is not a particularly good substitute as it has a peanut butter centre and the candy part of the bar is not as airy as a Crunchie bar. The best substitute would be honeycomb candy (also known as sea-foam, sponge or cinder candy). This is usually sold in pieces in bags, rather than in a bar, and may be chocolate coated or plain. The candy can be found in some supermarkets and candy stores. At time of writing, Trader Joe's sells a milk chocolate-coated honeycomb candy, which would be a good substitute. If you can't find a chocolate-coated version then plain honeycomb candy is also fine. If you can't find honeycomb candy in your local store then you can make your own by following Nigella's recipe for Hokey Pokey.
