Our answer

Nigella's Tiramisu Layer Cake (from NIGELLA CHRISTMAS) is similar to a traditional tiramisu but chocolate cake replaces the sponge fingers (ladyfingers/savoiardi). The recipe suggests using chocolate loaf cake, which can be store bought or home made.

We would avoid using a very light chocolate sponge (such as a chocolate Victoria sponge) as the cake needs to be robust enough to absorb the coffee mixture without becoming too mushy. So a slightly denser chocolate loaf cake is most suitable or you can use chocolate muffins as an alternative. If you would like to make your own cake then we would suggest trying Nigella's Quardruple Chocolate Loaf cake.
