Asked by Tekki38. Answered on 23rd February 2020

Full question

Is the Old Rag Pie a sweet or a main meal? Could you put meat in and forget the honey? Just curious. Thanks.

Our answer

Nigella's recipe for Old Rag Pie (from SIMPLY NIGELLA) is made with feta cheese, thyme and honey. The sweet and salty combination means that it does slightly sit between dessert and main meal, though we would mainly think of it as a sweet dessert-type dish. Nigella likens it to a "Greek cheesecake".

The Old Rag Pie could also be served as a light lunch, with a green salad, or as a brunch dish, with some fresh fruit. In Greek cuisine there are savoury meat versions of the pie (in Greek it is called "Pastavouropita") but we would not recommend just substituting meat for the cheese in Nigella's recipe, as the meat juices would affect the texture of the dish.
