Elvis Presley's Fried Peanut-Butter and Banana Sandwich

Introduction

Let's not mess around: you want trashy, I'll give you trashy - I'll give you the King. This recipe, for want of a better word, comes from a rhinestone gem of a cookbook, Are You Hungry Tonight?, a collection of his favourite foodstuffs bought on a visit to Graceland many years back, prized ever since and a delight from cover to cover. Even my most recent addition to a library already bursting with bad-taste titles, Liberace Cooks!, can't lose him his crown.

Believe it or not, the quantities below appear in edited, attenuated form. I honour the King but I can't be him.

For US cup measures, use the toggle at the top of the ingredients list.

  • I make it often, but I also put a couple of slices of fried bacon in it. Try!

  • It may violate the rules, but I'm using extra chunky peanut butter. Might even throw caution to the wind and add a dash of sriracha!

  • Indulgent but oh so comforting. If you want to raise the bar one more notch, dip the sandwich in beaten egg and make peanut butter and banana French toast!

  • My new favourite late night snack!

  • I added honey and a bit of cinnamon to the peanut butter mix, and after it had been toasted sprinkled more sugar and cinnamon over the top of the sandwich. Calories are already being discounted by making this dish so why not! :) mixed spice would work too.

  • I like to add crispy smoked streaky bacon to mine. If your making this, you've thrown the calorie count out the window anyway! ;)
