Loaf Pan Sizes For Sandwich Bread

Asked by babscanplay. Answered on 2nd June 2021

Full question

I'm making the Sandwich Loaf for the third time. But I found the dough was too much for one loaf pan - it overflowed like a giant chef's hat. I now bake it in two 9 X 4 X 4 inch (23 X 10 X 10 cm) Pullman pans and get two lovely plump loaves. What are the dimensions of the pan that Nigella uses? I also keep experimenting with replacing some of the white flour with whole wheat.

Our answer

Nigella's Old-Fashioned Sandwich Loaf (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) is a soft white bread that is baked in a 2-pound/900g loaf tin. Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules on the exact size of loaf pans - there is a wide variety and there can be some crossover in the sizes of what are sold as a 1-pound/450g and 2-pound/900g loaf pans.

As a guideline, the pan used by Nigella as a 2-pound/900g loaf pan is approximately 24 x 12 x 8cm/9.5 x 5 x 3 inches. These are the internal dimensions (measured from inside edge to inside edge). A smaller pan may have the top of the loaf slightly protruding over the sides of the pan when the loaf bakes, but this is not usually a problem and is in the style of a UK Farmhouse loaf.
