Substitute For Irish Cream Liqueur

Asked by lolita37. Answered on 17th June 2016

Full question

I don't have any Baileys liqueur for the Irish Cream Tiramisu. Is there anything else I could use?

Our answer

Nigella's Irish Cream Tiramisu is a tiramisu made with Baileys liqueur. The liqueur is whiskey-based but neat whiskey as a straight replacement may be too strong for the dessert. However a combination of whiskey and cream should give a close alternative to the liqueur. When making the mascarpone and egg mixture use 1 tablespoon of whiskey, 3 tablespoons of single (or heavy or whipping) cream and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract instead of the 75ml/1/4 cup of Baileys liqueur. You may also want to add an extra tablespoon of caster (superfine) sugar to the whole eggs when whisking them as the whiskey and cream combination is less sweet than the Baileys.

For the coffee mixture that you use for soaking the sponge fingers we suggest using 75ml/1/4 cup of whiskey instead of the Baileys and adding 100ml/1/2 cup of single (or heavy or whipping) cream to the coffee mixture.
