Which Bananas To Use

Asked by nra_my. Answered on 28th August 2016

Full question

Nigella uses bananas in several of her baking recipes, but which bananas does she use? I live in Asia and we have a wide variety! Also what is the weight of the bananas? Thank you.

Our answer

Nigella uses bananas in several recipes, including Banana Bread (from HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS) and Chocolate Banana Muffins (from KITCHEN). The type of banana most commonly found in the UK, Europe and the US is a strain called "Cavendish". You could also look out for the Chiquita brand bananas.

These bananas are larger than the Asian bananas (sometimes called "finger bananas"). The average weight of a medium-sized banana is approximately 150g (or around 6 ounces) with the skin on. For a large banana the average weight is approximately 190g (or around 7 ounces).
