Introduction

This is a huge favourite among my family and friends, and is often requested for pot-luck dinners. My Mum pulled it out of a newspaper in the early 70's. It's easy and delicious!

Ingredients

Serves: 4-6

  • 1 beef stew meat (gravy beef, shin etc)
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water

  • Preheat oven to 180C/250F.
  • Trim the meat of excess fat & sinew, cube into inch cubes.
  • Dice onion and crush garlic. Place into a casserole dish & mix well together.
  • Combine remaining ingredients in a jug, mix until well combined, and pour over meat onion & garlic.
  • Cook covered for 2.5 hours.
  • Additional Information

This can sit in a warm oven for a long time, improves on being re-heated, and is brilliant served with rice. This recipe is also very adaptable, feel free to add chili, or vegetables, make in a slow cooker, etc. I would encourage you to try the basic recipe first, it's savoury and garlicky, and very hard to beat.
