Mix the first 4 ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Melt the butter and syrup. When melted, add and stir in the bicarb until the mixture froths. Mix well into dry ingredients. Put into greased pan (I use my oven pan - about 50 cm x 30 cm). Pat mixture down gently with a wet hand. Bake at 160 C (325F) for 20 minutes till golden. I sometimes add sultanas or raisins.
