Ingredients

Serves: 6

Metric Cups
  • 1 tin giant white asparagus
  • 1 slice ham (per asparagus)
  • 30 grams butter
  • 30 grams flour
  • 300 millilitres milk (cream if you want to be indulgent)
  • Cheddar cheese (grated)
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cayenne pepper
  • pepper to taste
  • 1 tin giant white asparagus
  • 1 slice ham (per asparagus)
  • 1 ounces butter
  • 1 ounces flour
  • 11 fluid ounces milk (cream if you want to be indulgent)
  • Cheddar cheese (grated)
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cayenne pepper
  • pepper to taste

Method

Asparagus in White Sauce is a community recipe submitted by shoesandchocolate and has not been tested by Nigella.com so we are not able to answer questions regarding this recipe.

First make the white sauce:

  • Melt the butter and add the flour to form a paste, then add the milk little by little. (You may decide not to use all the milk as the sauce should be quite thick)
  • Stir for a few minutes on moderate temperature until thick and add the cheese. Once the cheese has melted, take it off the heat and put to one side.
  • Roll each Asparagus spear in a ham slice and pack flat in an ovenproof dish. Cover well with cheese sauce and sprinkle with Cayenne Pepper.
  • Bake in pre-heated oven at 180ºC/gas mark 4 for about 20 mins or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
