Negroni Sbagliato

Introduction

The classic Negroni is made with Campari, red vermouth and gin. This one, more of a Negroni spritz, using prosecco in place of the gin, is said to have been created by happy accident at the Bar Basso in Milan in the ’60s. The story may well be apocryphal, but cocktails always come with the romance of their own narrative. Sbagliato (roughly pronounced “sbalyato”) means mistaken in Italian, so this is best translated as Messed-Up Negroni.

I mess it up even more by changing the proportions (the original version being equal amounts of all three elements) and by serving it in a pitcher rather than making it up as individual cocktails.

For US cup measures, use the toggle at the top of the ingredients list.

Ingredients

Makes: 6 glasses

Metric Cups
  • 1 x 750ml bottle prosecco (chilled)
  • 325 millilitres campari
  • 175 millilitres of best-quality red vermouth
  • 1 x 750ml bottle prosecco (chilled)
  • 1⅓ cups campari
  • ¾ cup of best-quality red vermouth

Method

  1. Make sure your prosecco is chilled - and if you can keep the Campari and vermouth bottles in the fridge too, so much the better.
  2. Mix in a pitcher, throw in some orange slices and add ice to the glasses that you’re pouring the cocktail into.

  • Made this today for a pre Christmas lunch party. Absolutely delicious! I think I prefer this to a classic negroni now. Great discovery!

  • A wonderful delicious pitcher of Negronis served with Campari, Prosecco chilled served over ice in classic Martini glasses it's ideal served at Christmas time rather than Champagne and far more economical too. It's lethal I'm sure that you'll only be able to drink one glass! Enjoy!
