Full question
The Crème Caramel For One sounds wonderful, but as we're talking about a small dish it also sounds perfect for doing in an air-fryer rather than heating up a whole oven. Would that work, and would I need to adjust timings?
Our answer
Nigella's Crème Caramel For One (from COOK, EAT, REPEAT) is a solo treat of a silky baked custard crowned with a smoky bittersweet caramel. The custard gets its smooth texture from gentle cooking in a water bath on a low temperature.
An air fryer is essentially a small and powerful fan oven. It does tend to cook foods more quickly, even with the temperature being reduced, so is not ideal for very gentle cooking. However, the dish is sitting in a water bath, which will help to moderate the cooking. The dish needs to be covered with foil for the first part of the cooking and we suspect that it will be difficult to keep this in place with the force of the air fryer fan. If you did want to try in an air fryer and have a way to keep the foil in place, then we suspect that you may want to reduce the heat slightly more (to around 110c) and keep an eye on the crème caramel once you have uncovered it as it may need a shorter cooking time. It should be just set and have a slight quiver. But please note that as we have not tried cooking the crème caramel in an air fryer ourselves, we are unable to guarantee the results.
