Creepy Cookies Stamped Cookies

Asked by cbdb. Answered on 24th May 2015

Full question

Hi there. I'm planning to make some birthday party biscuits using a circular letter stamper with a personalised message on. I want to make sure the recipe I use is firm enough to hold the message when cooked. Would the Creepy Cookies recipe be suitable? Thanks.

Our answer

Most cookie doughs will spread a little when baked and it very much depends on how deep and wide the lettering is on your cookie stamp as to whether the message will be clearly visible after baking. As Nigella's Creepy Cookies (on the Nigella website) recipe contains some baking powder, the cookies will spread slightly and there is a risk that the message may be not quite clear enough.

You could use a sugar cookie recipe without a raising agent, or omit the baking powder from Nigella's Creepy Cookies recipe. When you cut out the cookies make sure that the dough is as cold as possible so that you get good definition on the lettering. Chill the dough between rolling and cutting and chill the cut out cookies again before baking.

  • Shortbread or springerle (& search online for recipes, as there are lemon springerle if you don’t like anise) are pretty much made for stamping!
