Keeping Butter Cookies

Asked by oconnees. Answered on 29th August 2016

Full question

The Butter Cut-Out Cookies look great! How long do they keep in a sealed tin? Thanks!

Our answer

Nigella's Butter Cut-Out Cookies (from HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS) are made with a vanilla cookie dough that can be rolled, cut, baked and then iced. The keeping time depends on whether the cookies are iced or not, as the cookies will soften once the icing is added. Without icing the cookies will keep well for 5-7 days. Once they are iced they are at their best within 2-3 days. The cookies should be kept in an airtight continer in a cool, dry place.

Un-iced cookies can also be frozen. Once the cookies have cooled fully they can be layered in a resealable container, with layers of baking parchment (parchment paper) between the layers. If the cookies are a basic shape, such as round or stars, then you may be able to store them in resealable plastic bags, but bear in mind that the cookies are delicate and could be damaged if knocked by other items in the freezer. The cookies thaw very quickly if placed on a wire rack and once defrosted can be iced and stored as above.
